What Social Managers Can Learn

From a Comedy Class

The other day I saw that Christina Vittas, Social Media Manager for Sesame Workshop and the online voice of Elmo, was doing a stand up show. I’ve written about why so many comedians work in social before, but haven’t covered social managers getting into comedy. It makes sense though: the best social strategies reflect universal truths and consumer observations—taking a comedy class can sharpen your senses.

I asked Christina to share what her experience has been like taking comedy classes and doing stand up, here’s what she told me:

“Working in social media, I always write ‘funny stuff’ and witty captions, but I never took the time to think deeper about what joke writing can be. By taking a 6-week standup comedy class I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and I learned pretty quickly that writing a joke for a social post is much different than writing a joke to be said in front of a room full of strangers.

Taking a comedy class has helped me explore my creative process and the different ways I can approach copywriting. It reminded me to look beyond my social media feeds for inspiration for my work. Even though I have found a great groove in my day-to-day social media work, there is always more to try, create, and storytell.

In fact, I think my greatest takeaway is how refreshed and inspired I feel! Thanks to my comedy class and dedicating the time to do my own writing, I feel rejuvenated with creativity and ready to dive into my next content calendar.”

For those wondering, Christina took Standup Level 1 with Ashley Morris at Manhattan Comedy School.
