"If you’re serious about stand-up, staying clear of the hack list is non-negotiable. A “hack” bit is material that’s stolen, overly derivative, or just plain tired—topics and punchlines that have been done to death by countless other comics. Think airline food, bad Tinder dates, or the difference between men and women—unless you have a truly original take, steer clear. Smart comics keep a running, updated list of overused premises to avoid falling into the trap of unoriginality. Your goal should always be to write fresh, authentic material that reflects your unique voice. Audiences—and bookers—can spot hacky material a mile away. Be original. Be bold. Stay off the list!"
